Awesome Akatarawas

Sunday - 18th June 2023

XTERRA Wellington are thrilled to open up a brand new venue to Wellington Trail Runners. We've been waiting for this DOC managed area to be developed enough to run a Trail Running Event on and that day has finally arrived. This course provides a diverse mix of MTB tracks, horse trails, open field running and bush, and gives you magnificent views out over the sea towards Kapiti Island. Whilst still being an XTERRA course, it's probably our least technical venue so if you know a novice trail runner bring them along. It's also an ideal venue if you are considering stepping up a distance, although watch out for Misery Hill on the long course, it's a killer.

Getting there

Long Course

17 km

A couple of short but tough climbs, mostly on open grassy areas, faster running on MTB and horse tracks. Probably our least technical venue, but if you are fit and climb well you will be quick here. Pacing yourself on those early climbs will are critical to enjoying the second half.

1:45 to 2:45 hours

Course runs anti-clockwise. If you are fit and climb hills well you will be quick on this course. It is probably our least technical venue but be careful on the open field areas. Irregular footing can be concealed by the grass. Start at HQ at run for 1km on gravel road and open field to spread you out. Into a forested area and then slow elevation gain up an eerily quiet valley. Easy open running at this point. Climb Misery Hill, bring your sense of humour. Once at the top look around and take in the view, turn left and come down through open grasslands, watch your ankles if you are running fast.Take a right and connect with an easy MTB climbing track up to the Kapiti MTB Club Downhill Track. Left onto the Trampers Track, do some swearing and waving of fists as you climb back up to Campbill’s Mill Road. Turn left, on the homeward stretch now. Down the Bridal Path and back home via a Bush Track with well-formed trails.

Medium Course

12 km

One solid climb in the middle, but the rest is easier, faster running on MTB and horse tracks. Probably our least technical venue, this is a great course to try if you are thinking of stepping up from Short to Medium Courses.

1:15 to 2:15 hours

Course runs anti-clockwise. One solid hill but the rest is easy. This is probably our least technical venue but be careful on the open field areas. Irregular footing can be concealed by the grass. Start at HQ and run up a gravel road (through a stream, get wet feet here) and take a right onto an easy MTB climbing track up to the Kapiti MTB Club Downhill Track. Let onto the Trampers Track, do some swearing and waving of fists as you climb up to Campbell’s Mill Road. Make sure you check out the views once you reach the top turn left down Campbell’s Mill Road and onto the Bridal Path and back home via a Bush Track with well-formed trails.

Short Course

7 km

This is a great novice Short Course, with one gentle climb to give you some great views out over the farm and Kapiti Island, followed by an easy return via horse tracks and a beautiful bush track to finish. You’ll get your feet wet, but it’s worth it.

45 to 75 mins

Course runs anti-clockwise. This is a great novice Short Course. One easy climb, great views, well-formed tracks, and a lovely finish through the bush. Start at HQ at run up a gravel road, through and easy stream and onto the MTB climbing track. MTB tracks are ideal to gain height with as they are built with very gentle gradients. Check out the views over Kapiti Island when you reach the top and then make your way down the Bridal Track. Finish with a last kilometer through lovely bush tracks. Job done.
